Training

A School shoe represents our training component which offers training courses for lay child and youth care workers working both in children’s homes and the community. The main focus of our training is on empowering lay care workers with basic child health, HIV and palliative care knowledge to improve the care of children living in children’s homes and also in the community.

All our training courses are practical so that the information childcare workers receive can be easily applied to their individual situations.  As an example in the children’s homes course we use a “mock case” and the participants learn how to admit the child to the home, how to look after him in the home especially when sick, how to check that the immunisations are up to date and that the child gains weight well and develops normally.  In the community course participants role-play a visit to the HIV clinic so that they can learn about what should happen there and what is expected of them if they accompany a child to a clinic.
