KwaZulu-Natal

Overview

The KwaZulu Natal branch began in 2006 with the medical clinic and training. Due to the high prevalence of HIV and TB in the province, the branch also offers community clinics to provide testing to children in the eThekweni, iLembe and Ugu districts. The team began offering palliative care services in 2010 and have seen a huge a great influx of cases as they address a huge need in the province.

Bigshoes KwaZulu-Natal:

  • Sees over 850 children annually
  • PPC provides specialist services to over 70 children each year
  • Trains over 120 care workers annually

The Team

The Durban team comprises of a small group of very passionate individuals who go far beyond any job description.

They manage to touch so many children’s lives within the larger Durban area.

Current Activities 

Medical and Community Clinics

The Bigshoes team offer medical clinics on and off site from Monday to Thursday mornings. They also provide Children’s Home health surveys to facilitate the development of their facilities.

PPC

Bigshoes KZN offers Paediatric Palliative Care services to Inkosi Albert Lethuli Central Hospital, Clairwood, St Mary’s, Mahatma Ghandi, RK Khan and King Edward III Hospitals. They also provide training to over 170 doctors within these hospitals.

Training

5-day Basic Child Health courses held once a month and offered to children’s home and community project staff. Ad hoc HIV Workshops are also offered to over 800 members of the community.

Abandoned Baby Project

Workshops are held as requested by the South African Police Service and Social Workers.
